The devastation was not the worst humans or cybertronians had seen before.
But the loss was felt just the same.
“Twenty one US soldiers tallies the human death toll,” General Lennox’s voice was quiet with weight. “Three Autobot casualties. 15 dead on the enemy side.”
Anna’s brow tightened as the news was delivered to the Secretary of Defense over a Windows holocam projecting two-way on her father’s desk. Not being a part of the fight electrified Anna’s militant instincts to a point of pitying torture. But she knew her father felt the same way. Secretary Regis Harold asked on the other side, “And you can confirm that a human was involved in the infiltration?”
General Lennox solemnly nodded, “Yes, sir. My men have just finished with temporary questioning until investigation can continue.”
“And the Autobots? What is their perspective on this?”
“No blame to us, sir, as usual. Optimus Prime is more tha

Samantha whirled to see Kaon smiling with triumph.
There was something behind the glinting, ruby optics that Samantha had witnessed before. Working a governmental position she had seen many men and women of many types fighting for many reasons. But every now and again, there was always one or two that were there to hurt other people--to conquer others. Tyrannic. Dominating.
That same sparkle was in Kaon’s eyes.
A jet of green-yellow slime splashed across Kaon’s face and he screamed with pain as it hissed on his armor. Samantha ducked against the exterior hangar wall as a giant, spined, metal lizard advanced onto Kaon, jumping and biting at his shoulders and face. Kaon roared with fury and struggled against the weight of the massive reptile. The lizard’s tale slammed against the lock lens in Kaon’s hand and the device went off. The lens must have then been pointed at Kaon because the larger bot gave a choke as his body shuddered before he transformed and s

Drift couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
He had only fought with Optimus once before while on Cybertron but he was forced to aid a separate Autobot battalion during that fight. What he was seeing he knew existed, but found it hard to imagine when he’d only known Optimus as simply brave, rational, and even gentle. Of course, you don’t survive as leader of half of a warring race for 5 millennia without finding a way to kill with accuracy.
Three Decepticons swarmed Optimus after he sliced one in half upon entering the base--the humans escaping through the gate. Optimus dodged the attack of the three with speed that smothered any inclination of his age and maneuvered through the chaos they caused like he had already gone through this fight. Drift moved to help, but was only able to score the back of one Decepticon before Optimus permanently incapacitated all three. “Aid Ironhide!” Optimus ordered before diving for cover from enemy fire.
Drift found himself s

The last time Samantha experienced the heart of the battlefield was when she was four; that was traumatic. The threat on her life when she was attacked at her grandmother’s house came close to that event; that was horrific.
But this. This was Hell.
Samantha crouched against the interior wall of the third weapons hangar, clasping the sides of her head in a weak attempt to protect herself. There was heat from fiery explosions so hot she couldn’t breathe, scorching fumes that stained her tongue with toxic blight, and pain from the pinching ache of icy terror that went to her joints. She had already thrown up once from the contamination of this abrupt attack. Now she struggled to keep what mind she had as her sanity was beginning to tear between the forces of anxiety and the possibility of death.
The hangar shuddered with the sound of mechanical gasps, rattling the many freight containers inside, the hanging lamps swayed from the ceiling. She couldn’t move. Kaon had promi

Samantha’s nerves started to unravel at the sight of Autobot military personnel. She hadn't really expected any cybertronians to be guarding...well, cybertronian weapons. She sat in the driver's seat of one of Kaon’s allies--a modern, classic Lincoln MXT, black and carrying a government license plate. This bot was a multi-changer and had also flown them from West Virginia to Nevada in ten minutes. When she asked Kaon about this cybertronian, he answered that there were a few friends who shared mutual feelings that he could trust; apparently they had helped him retrieve energon when he needed it and couldn't wait to get off Earth as he did.
They were keeping their distance from the base while the two cybertronians scanned the area ahead. Kaon was transformed into his alt mode--a large but somehow, cosmically shrunken--black, Walther P38. He rested in the passenger seat. After transforming, he briefly explained that he had a “mass-dis

The shadows whispered.
Samantha’s mind wandered in the darkness that had drowned her soon after she was abducted--reasons for the unconsciousness was still unknown to her as she found her way back.
The thin, incoherent voices in the darkness morphed into the sound of a crackling fire echoing off cave walls unseen. When she finally did open her eyes she still couldn’t grasp what she was seeing. She was laying on the moist floor of a hollowed out cave in front of a meager fire. The warmth was a blessing as Samantha found her whole body sore and her head aching from the distress.
She slowly rolled over onto her back confronted with a high ceiling that the light of the fire couldn’t reach, giving it the illusion that it went on into a reserved abyss. All was quiet except for the popping of fire-chewed wood and the occasional dripping of water somewhere. The tail end of the night’s adrenaline remained and Samantha pushed herself up to sit, supporting her weight with

“Alexander Faab,” Anna presented to Optimus and Drift a mugshot of the ex-government official by projector in NEST’s Autobot hangar. They were back in the states at NEST original headquarters in Washington D.C. With them was Anna’s father, William Lennox, as well as the current NEST director, Jim Rochester, and the human team that originally arrested the man in question.
Anna continued her presentation, “You may recall Faab used to be a government official while simultaneously being a double agent for the secret pro-Decepticon group Circuit Breaker. He was one of many who were arrested and sentenced to incarceration for terrorist participation with the Decepticons right before the war ended.”
“Does his history say he made contact with Megatron?” Optimus asked, arms crossed and studying the image on the projector hard.
Anna gave a single nod, “He was one of the few humans who faced Megatron and did his bidding while coming out of it

Samantha slammed the front door of her house, her unstable emotions compelling her purse onto the wood floor with force.
She had always been at war with her emotions--particularly anger and the passion behind it that had dominated her life since the accident. Who could blame her? Who could understand that? Her life was torn apart with the family car at age four, and it seemed to be unraveling once again.
Samantha threw off the shoes she hated so and strode through the main hall to the kitchen, the wine cabinet calling her name. She perceived no thoughts--only emotions. They blurred her sense of clarity, guiding her fumbling hands over her grandmother’s shelves until she somehow clasped the bottle opener and a container of Chateau’ Lafite.
She only came to her senses when the sound of the news violated her ears and the glass of wine she was holding was half gone. The sound of a reporter was speaking over edited video, “Humans and Cybertronians stood together to take a

HQ in Canberra was just barely big enough for Optimus’ size. He had to lean forward a few inches so his head didn't scrape against the ceiling but the large hangar was equipped with more than enough tech to reach Cybertron thanks to the robotic species sharing their technology years ago.
Optimus settled for kneeling in front of the large monitor that mimicked Teletraan design as the feed was patched through. In the hangar with him was Drift who had been scouting the outskirts of Canberra during the ceremony; although he was much younger than Optimus the bot had a case of permanent paranoia being constructed in the midst of the war. He believed Decepticons were everywhere and saw to being Optimus’ personal bodyguard whenever the Prime went to Earth. But despite these minor flaws Drift took most situations casually and had perfect timing in decision-making. Because of this Optimus trusted him.
Drift was leaning against the human catwalks with his arms crossed. Behind him was

Optimus had always admired Earth's moon as Cybertron did not have one. It brought light and comfort in the darkness of night and had, over the years, inspired humans’ souls through literature and art. As he sat on the edge of Australia’s capital, away from the evening celebrations, he found peace sitting under its yellow rays; his audio receptors picked up the distant sound of Earth vehicles and human chatter.
Such sounds had become almost native to him. Before Cybertron was restored Optimus considered Earth as his adopted home. Very few Autobots agreed with that frame of reference--some even calling it sacrilege and seeing it as their leader giving up hope that their home planet would never be restored. But Optimus wasn't being pessimistic at the time. He was one of the few cybertronians who saw the potential of the human race: Their compassion, the majesty of their planet, and the stunning similarities that humans and cybertronians shared. Through Primus himself the two r

Dr. Madison could hardly stand the Clack! Clack! Clack! of her heels on hard floor but it was important that she keep her appearance professional and intimidating. Strength through presentation was just step one of victory. If she could make an impression, be the one that makes men’s skin crawl at her very presence, then it was just another form of power added to her repertoire. One more access to succeeding in keeping alien life forms from inhabiting Earth property.
She understood her intentions of completely banning cybertronians from Earth were useless—being that the Autobots were heroes and over 89% of humans on the planet saw them as equals.
The statistics disgusted her. But that small 11% of the registered population either didn’t want to get involved or had the same point of view she did. She was determined to strengthen the percentage that favored her point of view.

It was the fifth time he had bowed his head in honor that week.
He stood with his hands folded in front of him and towered over the multitude of humans who also paid their respects in silence. All wore red poppies pinned to their clothing and all heads were bowed; it was quite a sight at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra as hundreds took part in the speechless prayer. Though Optimus Prime was always willing to respect those who had given their lives during the war, he was long weary of hearing those honoring him—which he knew was about happen.
Australia Prime Minister Olivia King lifted her head and cleared her throat, speaking into the microphone beam, “To close our ceremony, Optimus Prime will grace us with a few words of remembrance. Optimus?”
It was also the fifth time he was asked to speak during a ceremony that week. He lost count over the years how many times he’d done this, but he never left the people of Earth on their own du

It was gray that terrible day.
Gray as the midday clouds threatened rain which most would say why it was terrible. But in the eyes of a 4 year-old girl sitting in the backseat of the family car, it was a day of fun and peace. Sammy knew it was going to be a fun day because she was promised ice cream, and peace because her grandmam was sitting next to her. The old woman nodded completely interested as Sammy articulated a dragon story her and her friends imagined in preschool. At that age, Sammy believed all grandmams defined peace. She remembered her grandmam for a long time.
“And den—and den the geen one tushes a sdar. And—and den his name is Dolphen,” Sammy struggled to tell the story quickly.
“His name is Dolphin?” Grandmam

It's one my favorite times of year--and that's compiling all the books I read in the previous year and  bubbling down my faves based on the Goodreads Choice Awards.

:overwhelmed:   goodreads stamp by snickerdoodlie  :overwhelmed:

As a member on Goodreads I both have fun and value other people's tastes in literature. Not only do I get to know them better by understanding their opinions, I also get an idea on which audience prefers a specified book which, in turn, lets me know if I might be interested.

NOTE: These are books that I got around to reading in 2016 and were not necessarily published in 2016 (which I think is the best kind of list).

I hide all spoilers in my reviews.

If you have a favorite book I'd love to hear what it is! ^^ And if you have a Goodreads account shoot me a friend request.

In pic: (I'm the one with Stormtrooper's arm over my shoulder).

I had a friend who said writing wasn't a real hobby.
I disagree completely. I've written books and short stories and journals since as far back as I can remember. Live on a small cattle farm on my grandpa's property in Northern California. I recently graduated from a local community college and am currently working at a news station as a first step toward my dreams of making movies from my novels. And I'm an identical twin!
